Alan Rankin is a designer and editor of sound effects for film and video games who, along with Mark Stoeckinger, was a Supervising Sound Editor on 2009's Star Trek. Rankin is a member of the Motion Picture Sound Editors, and is thus credited with the acronym "M.P.S.E." Rankin and Stoeckinger both share an Academy Award nomination for Best Achievement in Sound Editing for their work on Star Trek.

Rankin and Stoeckinger have worked together on films since the 1993 comedy Dennis the Menace, whoce cast include Star Trek film actors Christopher Lloyd and Paul Winfield. They both previously worked with Star Trek's director and producer, J.J. Abrams, on the 2006 Paramount Pictures release, Mission: Impossible III. Like Star Trek, this film was co-written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

In total, Rankin and Stoeckinger have collaborated on seventeen films. In addition to those mentioned above, their other film credits have included Heat (1995, featuring Ashley Judd), Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) and Windtalkers (2002, starring Christian Slater), How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (featuring Bebe Neuwirth), The Italian Job (2003), The Last Samurai (2003, co-written by John Logan), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), Be Cool (2005, featuring The Rock), and Gone Baby Gone (2007).

Rankin has received ten Golden Reel Award nominations from the Motion Picture Sound Editors organization. He and Stoeckinger were both nominated for their work on Mission: Impossible 2, The Last Samurai, The Italian Job, The Day After Tomorrow, and Mission: Impossible III. Rankin was also nominated for his work on End of Days (1999) and in the video games Conquest: Frontier Wars, Lineage II: The Chaotic Chronicle, Freelance, and Unreal Tournament III. All of these latter nominations were shared with Star Trek sound designer Scott Martin Gershin.

Rankin's many other film credits include Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992), In the Line of Fire (1993), Outbreak (1995), Congo (1995), Pocahontas (1995) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996), Courage Under Fire (1996), Godzilla (1998), American Beauty (1999, which featured Scott Bakula), Final Destination (2000), Vertical Limit (2000, which featured Alexander Siddig), Blade II (2002, featuring Ron Perlman), Unfaithful (2002), 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), and The Amityville Horror (2005, starring Jimmy Bennett and Rachel Nichols).
