Robert "Bob" Smithson is a makeup artist who appeared as a Klingon officer in the Star Trek: The Next Generation second season episode "A Matter Of Honor" and as a holographic Klingon in the second season episode "The Icarus Factor". Smithson is the brother of fellow makeup and Trek artist Mike Smithson.

Smithson started his career as production assistant on The Blob (1988) and on Moonwalker (1988). He then worked for the special effects company Steve Johnson's XFX, Inc. as special effects artist on The Abyss (1989), Night Angel (1990, with Bernd Rantscheff), Darkman (1990), and the television series Monsters (1989-1990, with Brian Wade).

Following work as production assistant in the special makeup effects department on Gremlins II: The New Batch (1990) and Scanners II: The New Order (1991, with Mike Smithson and Roxy D'Alonzo), he specialized in creating and applying contact lenses.

As contact lens technician he worked on the television series String Medicine (2005, with Belinda Bryant), Nip/Tuck (2006, with Debbie Zoller), Thick and Thin (2006), Night Stalker (2005-2006, with Roxy D'Alonzo and Lygia Orta), Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King (2006), CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2007, with Clinton Wayne), Moonlight (2008, with Francine Shermaine), Dexter (2008), and Cold Case (2006-2009, with Louisa V. Anthony and Belinda Bryant). Film work include Venom (2005, with Ed French, Brad Look, and Joe Podnar), Click (2006, with Clinton Wayne and Derik Wingo), Hood of Horror (2006, with Don Lanning and Mark Shostrom), The Prestige (2006, with Terry Baliel and Kenny Myers), Driftwood (2006), Spider-Man 3 (2007, with Cristina Patterson Ceret, Adam Brandy, Mike Smithson, Michael F. Blake, and Andrew Clement), Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), I Am Legend (2007, with Greg Solomon, Jamie Kelman, and Barry R.
