A cosmic artifact faces total destruction!

Dyson Sphere is a Pocket TNG novel – #50 in the numbered series – written by Charles Pellegrino and George Zebrowski. Published by Pocket Books, it was first released in April 1999.

Summary[]

From the book jacket
Two hundred million kilometers across, with a surface area that exceeds that of a quarter-billion worlds, the Dyson sphere is one of the most astounding discoveries the Federation has ever made. Now the USS Enterprise has returned to explore the awesome mysteries of the sphere. Intrigued by what is possibly the greatest archaeological treasure of all time, Captain Jean-Luc Picard hopes to discover the origin of humanoid life throughout the galaxy – or perhaps the ultimate secret of the Borg.
But when a neutron star approaches on a collision course with the sphere, a mission of discovery becomes a desperate race against time. The many sentient species inhabiting the sphere face extinction – can even the Starship Enterprise save them all?

Memorable quotes[]

"Well, there's something you don't see every day. Your archaeological site comes to life and starts fighting with another archaeological site."

- Captain Dalen

Background information[]

  • This novel is a sequel to TNG: "Relics".
  • This is the only Star Trek novel featuring contribution by Charles Pellegrino, who Zebrowski had previously collaborated with on The Killing Star.
  • According to Zebrowski, the final manuscript was heavily edited after it was turned in, without the authors' knowledge, resulting in significant changes to the novel. (Voyages of Imagination, pp. 199-200)
  • The cover image of the USS Enterprise-D leaving the Dyson sphere is taken from a scene in "Relics". The image has been turned sideways.
