Retlaw plant

Retlaw plant

The retlaw plant was a poisonous, mobile plant native to the planet Phylos. The retlaw moved by walking on its roots. When it stopped, its roots bored back into the ground.

In 2269, Hikaru Sulu was poisoned by the retlaw and nearly died before the antidote was given to him by Agmar. (TAS: "The Infinite Vulcan")

"Retlaw" spelled backwards is "Walter", a nod to Walter Koenig, who penned the episode. (Star Trek: The Official Guide to the Animated Series, p. 68)
Not only does this plant feature in the novelization of "The Infinite Vulcan" (as published in Star Trek Log 2) but it also reappears, summoned by one of Sulu's memories, in the novelization of "Once Upon a Planet" (as published in Star Trek Log 3).
