Theodore "Ted" Sorel (14 November 193630 November 2010; age 74) was the actor who played Kaval in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine first season episode "Duet". He was born Theodore Eliopoulos in San Francisco, California. He died from Lyme disease at the Actors' Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey at the age of 74.

Film work[]

In the 1970s, Sorel appeared in two films that were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture: Lenny (1974) and Network (1976). He is best known, however, for his role as Dr. Edward Pretorius in From Beyond (1986, starring Jeffrey Combs).

His other film credits include Without a Trace (1983, which also featured Thomas Kopache, Terry O'Quinn, Freda Foh Shen, and Bill Smitrovich) and Basket Case 2 (1990, with Jason Evers and Matt Malloy).

Television work[]

Sorel was among several Star Trek alumni to perform in the 1983 PBS adaptation of William Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra. Star Trek: The Original Series stars Walter Koenig and Nichelle Nichols also had roles in this production, as did James Avery, Earl Boen, Barrie Ingham, and Dan Mason.

Aside from Star Trek, Sorel appeared on many other television shows, including Falcon Crest (with Robert Foxworth and Lilyan Chauvin), Hardcastle and McCormick (starring Brian Keith and Daniel Hugh Kelly, in an episode with James Cromwell), Fame (with Scott Marlowe), Matlock (with Richard Lineback and Lawrence Pressman), St. Elsewhere (with Ed Begley, Jr., Melinda Culea, Bruce Greenwood, Gregory Itzin, Norman Lloyd, and Jennifer Savidge), Wings (starring Steven Weber), and Mad About You (with Judyann Elder). He also guest-starred in three episodes of NBC's Law & Order starring Carolyn McCormick, including one with Richard Cox and Donna Murphy and another directed by Gabrielle Beaumont and featuring Bibi Besch, Tim Kelleher, and the aforementioned Lawrence Pressman.

Stage work[]

Sorel participated in the American Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Connecticut, on numerous occasions from 1961 through 1979. Among the plays in which he performed at the Festival were As You Like It, Julius Caesar, King Lear, and Twelfth Night.

In 1967, Sorel was in a production of Tartuffe at San Francisco's American Conservatory Theatre, with Deep Space Nine regular René Auberjonois portraying the title role. He also appeared in an American Conservatory Theatre production of Death of a Salesman starring Laurence Luckinbill.

In 1978, Sorel was an understudy on the off-Broadway production Drinks Before Dinner, which starred Christopher Plummer. He made his Broadway debut two years later in Horowitz and Mrs. Washington.

In 1981, Sorel co-starred with Harris Yulin in a production of Hedda Gabler at the Roundabout Theatre in New York City. The following year, he acted with the legendary Angela Lansbury in the short-lived Broadway play A Little Family Business. Sorel's final Broadway appearance was in The School for Scandal in late 1995.
