Tricorder 1930 newspaper

Newspaper appearing on tricorder

Thailand, historically known as Siam, was a country in southeast Asia, the capital of which was Bangkok.

In 1930, a news report concerning "Bangkok, Thailand" was printed in a New York newspaper said that the "United States of America Minister" advised American citizens that did not have "urgent reason" to be in Thailand to return home for security reasons. The report was on the same page as a murder, and the death of a "local social worker" Edith Keeler. This was one of the images Spock's tricorder recorded before he and Captain Kirk transported back in time. (TOS: "The City on the Edge of Forever")

In reality, the country was still referred to by its original name, Siam, in 1930. It was not renamed Thailand until 1939.
Siam was mentioned on a 17th century map, known as "Harmonia macrocosmica seu atlas universalis et novus, totius universi creati cosmographiam generalem, et novam exhibens", which was created by Andreas Cellarius. A scan of the original can be found here. This map was seen in the Star Trek: Enterprise opening title sequences.
