The prototype of the Excelsior class ships, the USS Excelsior (NX-2000) was initially fitted with a transwarp drive and proclaimed "the great experiment", the ship had an ignoble start when its engines failed when it was called into action to prevent the theft of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) in 2285. While this was due to deliberate sabotage Starfleet finally cancelled the transwarp project altogether. There was nothing wrong with the basic engineering of the space frame however, and in all other areas the Excelsior class was still the most advanced ship in Starfleet. So in light of this, Starfleet rapidly decided to fit the Excelsior class with a more conventional propulsion system. Other modifications included a different bridge structure and a different shuttle-bay structure. Today the ships of the Excelsior class continue in service.
A refit version of The Excelsior class was concieved a couple of years later, housing new warp engines, an extended engineering hull, an additional pair of impulse engines and a new deflector dish. In the 2370's, this refit version was incorporated with new technology such as quantum torpedo systems to give it a much greater weapons capability intended to extend the usefulness of the class. However, the unfortunate battle between the USS Lakota and the USS Defiant (NX-74205) clearly established the superiority of the latter.

Excelsior class refit
Background information
The Excelsior class was designed by Bill George and built at Industrial Light and Magic for Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.
The Excelsior class refit modifications were designed by John Eaves under the supervision of production designer Herman Zimmerman for Star Trek: Generations.
