Background information[]

  • This is the first Star Trek novel by Esther Friesner. She commented, "I made the leap from watching the show to wanting to write a Trek novel because the editor of the Trek line asked me if I'd like to do so for the new Deep Space Nine. I think this invitation came before DS9 began to air, so I didn't have a lot of background to catch up on." (Voyages of Imagination, p. 196) Friesner's idea "came from the plight of people dealing with the aftermath of a long war, especially those whom the war has rendered as Displaced Persons." (Voyages of Imagination, p. 232)
  • The novel is set between the first and second seasons of DS9. Mary F. Taylor commented that the events of the novel could explain what she saw as a change in Bashir's character, from over eager in the first season to more subdued in the second. (Adventures in Time and Space, p 189)
